Dental Fears
Expect Comfort At Every Visit
Posted on May 01, 2014 by William J. Claiborne, DDS MS
When most people think of dentistry, ‘comfort’ is not usually a word that comes to mind. Yet, our patients compliment us frequently on the level of comfort we provide.
Although we offer Oral Sedation for fearful patients or those having lengthy procedures, it is my belief that a gentle touch and communication with the patient enhances their comfort level regardless of sedation with their treatment.
Numbing medications begin with a swab placed on the area for injection. This has a numbing solution on it and removes the ‘stick’ you typically expect. Going slow with the needle and administering novocain at a slow pace helps avoid those jolts that can result otherwise.
We also communicate with patients who are not sedated throughout the procedure. We find patients are more at ease when they know what is being done. We also reassure patients that, at any time during the process, they can signal that they are experiencing discomfort or need a break.
Typically, after one appointment, patients who were once fearful or dreaded dental procedures realize they are in good hands! If fear or anxiety is an issue for you, begin with a Consultation. During this time, we’ll discuss options that are appropriate for your specific needs. Call (828) 274-9440 to speak with a friendly staff member.
How Fearful Patients Can Achieve A Healthy Mouth
Posted on Apr 07, 2014 by William J. Claiborne, DDS MS
As a Periodontal Specialist, I see a great many adults who have developed gum disease, and lost teeth as a result, because of dental fear. Although modern techniques and advanced technology in dentistry greatly enhance comfort with less time required for treatment, these advancements do nothing to help fearful patients overcome dental fears.
Sadly, dental fear prevents many adults from having regular dental care or receiving treatment when problems are small. Many will wait until there is an urgent need that ‘forces’ them into a dental office. In our office, most fearful patients begin with a Consultation appointment.
In the Consultation, we discuss their current situation, goals and concerns. I find many perceive a sense of lost control while in a reclined position in a narrow chair, which makes them feel vulnerable. Because the mouth is a very sensitive area, fearful patients actually anticipate pain. These patients often need time to gain confidence in my commitment to their comfort.
While dental fear is not uncommon among adults, it can be overcome. Most fearful patients begin with Oral Sedation, which is taken prior to your arrival so you are relaxed from the very start. Once you are in the treatment chair, a staff member is continually by your side to monitor you with sophisticated equipment.
Numbing medications are provided once you are totally relaxed, so this part of the process causes no anxiety. You’ll be relaxed throughout your visit and likely won’t remember any part of treatment. Yet, afterwards, recovery is quick and you’ll feel refreshed.
If dental fears prevent you from a healthy, confident smile, remember that every journey begins with a first step. Call (828) 274-9440 for a Consultation appointment. We’ll meet and discuss your options so you can decide how you wish to proceed.
New Techniques & Technology Helping To Conquer Dental Fear
Posted on Feb 18, 2014 by William J. Claiborne, DDS MS
If you fear going to the dentist, you are not alone. It is estimated that over 30% of Americans avoid going to the dentist because of some level of anxiety or fear. Even worse, about 10% of those are classified as “dental phobics,” or persons with such a high fear level that they avoid the dentist until an emergency need arises.
With these statistics, it comes as no surprise that the nation’s leading cause of tooth loss is periodontal disease. Without 6-month check-ups and cleanings, your risk of developing gum disease, among other problems, is high.
If the fear of discomfort has prevented you from regular dental care, you are encouraged to share those feelings with a dentist who is sensitive to your concerns. This discussion will allow us to understand your level of fear and explain the methods of comfort available.
In our office, we offer both Oral Sedation, which is in pill form so there are no needles used to administer the medication. You are totally relaxed throughout treatment and have little or no memory of the procedure afterward. The medication is safe and recovery time is quick. For added safety and comfort, you are monitored by a trained staff member and sophisticated equipment throughout your procedure.
I believe the confidence of a beautiful, healthy smile enhances one’s quality of life and every person should feel achieving this is within reach. Hopefully, the advancements in dental techniques and technology will result in a new generation who live their lifetime with all their natural teeth.
If you have dental fear or know someone who does, suggest they begin with a consultation by calling (828) 274-9440. This conversation could be the first step to a terrific smile!
Periodontists Team With Dentists For Beautiful, Healthy Smiles!
Posted on Feb 06, 2014 by William J. Claiborne, DDS MS
Instead of having one dental professional for your oral health and smile’s appearance, general dentists regularly team with periodontists. Although general dentists often refer patients to us for periodontal problems, such as gum disease, we also team with your general dentist to create treatment plans that best conform to your needs and goals.
While periodontists are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, they are also trained in performing cosmetic procedures involving gum tissue. This skill level includes cosmetic procedures to enhance the appearance of your smile.
A common procedure for smile enhancement is crown lengthening. We also are trained to a ‘gummy smile.’ These procedures correct the amount of gum tissue that shows in a full smile, creating an even, balanced gum line that reveals a proper tooth length that is balanced to one’s facial features. Periodontists also correct gum recession by covering exposed root surfaces, which prevents sensitivity to hot and cold and for esthetic reasons.
If you have dental fear or anxiety, feel free to discuss this at your initial consultation or exam. We have several options that can enhance your comfort throughout any procedure. Like your general dentist, our goal is to make your experience a positive one so your overall outcome is a healthy, attractive smile!
